How long have you been in the Candy Wrapping business? About 3 years!! My business license says May 2004, but I'm sure I've been wrapping about 6 months before that. :-)
Why did you start a home business? I have always been crafty, as many Wrappers are. I enjoy working on my computer and really wanted to bring in some extra money to help pay for the computer as well as my different crafts. When I found candy wrapping, I was hooked. Now the business DOES pay for its self and I'm making some extra too. Very rewarding.
What do you enjoy most about having your own business? I enjoy the freedom. Wrapping can be a bit demanding, you must get the customer's order in a timely manner so it is ready for their event. But you are setting the time and you control what you do for your business. I feel it is up to me when it comes to how big or small my business is. Right now I also work outside of my home for an investment advisor. But as of this month, I cut back my hours and only work for the advisor 4 days a week. I feel my business is doing good enough to warrant the reduction in time at my other job. This also gives me more time at home and working on my business and helping it grow. It is also so rewarding to get email and phone calls from your customer that has received their personalized wrapper and saying how pleased they are with the final product.
What is your favorite item (s) to personalize? I really like the creative side, so I like making all my personalized items. If I had to choose one, Water Bottles seem to be my best seller and I really like working with he materials, most of the time. Some times the water proof paper sticks and the tape is a bit goopy, but in the end everything works out great and they are fairly fast to put together. I love a challenge.
Does your family help out with your business? My family is extremely supportive and helpful. My husband can cut wrappers very well as well as wrap water bottles and Minis. My sisters help me with some of he bigger orders when needed as well.
If you were to start over again, how would you do things different? I am very lucky. Everything has fallen into place pretty easily. I think the only thing I would have done different is to find candy wrapping chat groups sooner. I am a member of the ZyberBoard, which is extremely helpful. I don't feel so alone in this business and have a great place to go if I have questions. It is also very rewarding to help others in the candy wrapping business.
Anything you'd like to share with others thinking about starting a home business like yours? Find a good and supportive candy wrapping chat group. This is extremely helpful when you are starting out and even as you grow. I would be lost without my friends on the chat boards.
